Mango Lassi

Lassi is a traditional Indian yogurt-based drink blended with water, salt and some sugar, if you want. It can be flavored with fruits and a pinch of spices like cumin powder. Lassi has evolved from a simple cooling down buttermilk to a milkshake with added cream and blended with various fruits. Plain lassi or a flavored one are both equally refreshing and delicious.

It’s hard to resist this protein and vitamin C-rich Indian take on a smoothie. Sujata grew up drinking mango lassi as an afternoon snack during the hot summers of Mumbai which is also mango season in India. As it starts warming up, especially here in Arizona and Southern California, this is the perfect drink to cool off while also satisfying your dessert cravings.

Over the years, lassi has become very popular and has become a staple in most Indian restaurants along with chai. Over the years we have seen mango lassi gain popularity with both Indians and non-Indians and across all age groups. The creamy drink has a soothing effect after a spicy Indian meal.

The tanginess of yogurt and the sweet and fragrant mango complement each other so well. Our shrikhand is another amazing dish that showcases this great flavor combination. A must for anyone with a sweet tooth.

This drink can be made with a good quality fresh mango instead of canned mango pulp. However, you may have to strain the lassi to remove any fiber.
